Tables and the table editor

Write Markdown tables, then sort, align and rearrange them in a spreadsheet-like editor.

You'll learn to
  • Write a Markdown table by hand
  • Edit tables in the table editor
  • Paste cells from Excel or Numbers

Pro The table editor is a Pro feature. Writing tables by hand is free. Try it free for 14 days.

  1. A table by hand

Separate cells with | and put a line of dashes under the header row:
    | Name | Role |
    | --- | --- |
    | Ada | Engineer |

  2. Open the table editor

Put the cursor inside a table and press ⇧⌥⌘T (or choose Format ▸ Table Editor…). With the cursor outside a table, the same command inserts a new one.

  3. Edit like a spreadsheet

Type into cells, add or delete rows and columns, and move them with ⌥ and the arrow keys. Set each column's alignment and sort rows A→Z or Z→A.

  4. Tidy the source

Format ▸ Format Table lines up the pipes so the Markdown is easy to read.

  5. Paste from a spreadsheet

Copy a block of cells in Excel or Numbers, click a cell in the table editor and paste. The cells fill the grid from there.

Try it

Open 02 Meeting Notes, put the cursor in its table and sort a column with the table editor.
