Markdown in ten minutes

The handful of Markdown symbols that cover almost everything you'll write.

You'll learn to
  • Write headings, emphasis, lists and links
  • Add quotes, images and horizontal rules
  • Understand why Markdown stays portable
  1. Headings

Start a line with # for a title, ## for a section and ### for a subsection. Headings also build the document's outline (lesson 7).

  2. Emphasis

Wrap words in **double stars** for bold, *single stars* for italic and ~~tildes~~ for strikethrough. Use `backticks` for inline code.

  3. Lists

Start lines with - for bullets or 1. for numbers. Indent with Tab to nest. - [ ] makes a task you can tick.

  4. Links and images

[text](https://example.com) makes a link. Put ! in front, as in ![a caption](images/photo.png), to show an image instead.

  5. Quotes and dividers

Start a line with > for a block quote. A line with just --- draws a horizontal rule.

  6. Why it matters

Everything above is plain text. Your document opens in any editor, works with Git and never locks you in. Proseport adds the preview and the exports on top.

Try it

Open a new tab and write a short to-do list with a heading, a bold word, a link and three tasks.
